Description

The Sighing of the Wind

December 1939. Settled in their home on the banks of the Péribonka River with her husband and children, Hermine is in the midst of a depression. The talented singer cannot forgive herself for having lost her child, Victor, while on tour throughout North America. And her already fragile morale encounters yet another blow when her husband Toshan announces that he is joining the army and must leave immediately for training at the Citadelle in Québec City. It is simply too much! Faced with a forecast of harsh conditions for the oncoming winter and with no man around to protect them, Hermine decides she will move her small family to Val-Jalbert where her parents are, to the ghost town which is dear to her heart. She also rents a place in Roberval for her mother-in-law, Tala, and young Kiona. And when Tala’s cabin is deliberately set on fire in the middle of the night, everyone quickly leaves for Lac-Saint-Jean to find refuge in a safe haven.

However, following Hermine’s first visit to Roberval, the young woman is threatened by strangers. Her horse is seriously wounded by a gunshot and she, herself, is saved just in time by a neighbour. A series of clues help Tala understand that these people want to harm her in revenge for the death of a man, killed by her husband a long time ago. Since Christmas celebrations are near and her parents are away, Hermine decides to bring Kiona with her to Val-Jalbert. Tala goes into the forest for a few days, accompanied by Madeleine. And when Jocelyn and Laura return from Chicoutimi, things take a turn for the worse when Laura sees the young Métis. She orders her daughter to take Kiona back to Roberval but Hermine stands firm, not giving in to her mother’s emotional outburst; this gives Jocelyn the opportunity to become acquainted with his illegitimate daughter.

Toshan obtains permission to leave for a few days and returns to Val-Jalbert for the Holidays. With his parents and children, he attends Christmas Mass where Hermine, once again, seduces her audience with her exceptional voice. And then, in the middle of winter, young Louis is kidnapped by Paul Tremblay, the man responsible for the latest events regarding Tala. Finding out that Laura is wealthy, the rogue senses a good deal. Panic breaks out in Val-Jalbert and when Hermine shares the bad news with Toshan, he decides to go back and rescue his half-brother. He arrives at the same time the Chardins receive a call from Tremblay’s mistress. Ashamed, the woman has decided to betray her lover. She helps Toshan find Louis deep inside the Trou de la Fée cavern located in Desbiens. Toshan then returns to the forest, where the army has opened a camp for German prisoners.

In the springtime, when the delivery of Betty’s baby turns to tragedy, Hermine receives terrible news from Simon, who is to marry Charlotte. The wedding is compromised, but the sudden return of Toshan, who is thinking about deserting the army, once again changes everything. Will the two lovers find the strength to face, once again, new challenges and ordeals?
