This story begins one snowy evening, thanks to an orphan wolf. Claire, the only daughter of a master paper maker, seems to have a predetermined destiny. She had a happy childhood despite her mother’s strictness and she now dreams of love, like all seventeen year-old girls. Her heart’s desire her neighbor, Frédéric Giraud, heir to the wealthy Ponriant estate.
But one spring day while taking a stroll with Sauvageon, the wolf she has raised, Claire’s peaceful life is disturbed by a strange encounter. A young convict on the run is hiding in the barn of Basile Drujon, a former teacher and an old friend.
This novel takes the reader back to a pivotal era, the end of the 19th century, in the beautiful setting of the Eaux-Claires Valley, a historical site in the heart of the Charente region.
