Val-Jalbert, un soir de l’été 1946. Alors que la Seconde Guerre mondiale est enfin terminée et que la Terre entière panse ses plaies, un événement désastreux vient déranger la quiétude de la famille Chardin, dans le petit village ouvrier abandonné depuis une quinzaine d’années. Hermine apprend cette mauvaise nouvelle alors qu’elle chante dans l’opéra La Bohème, au Capitole de Québec. Ses parents étant ruinés, la jeune femme décide de travailler davantage, ce qui la conduira à rencontrer un riche Suisse, Rudolph Metzner, séduisant veuf, mais surtout mélomane et passionné d’art lyrique qui idolâtre en secret le Rossignol de Val-Jalbert depuis ses
débuts.
Après un merveilleux hiver en famille, dans leur maison au bord de la Péribonka, Hermine et Toshan se séparent à regret. La famille de la chanteuse se réfugie à Val-Jalbert, dans la maison de Charlotte appelée le Petit Paradis, pendant que la jeune femme enregistre un disque à Québec, sous l’égide de Metzner. Mais la veille de son retour au Lac-Saint-Jean, l’impresario l’enlève et l’emmène chez lui, où il la retient prisonnière d’une « cage dorée ». Hermine saura regagner sa liberté, grâce au chant et à son talent. De nouveau enceinte de Toshan, elle retrouvera les siens avec un immense bonheur.
The Gates of Past
1946… a summer’s evening in Val-Jalbert. WWll is finally over and the entire world is busy healing its wounds when disaster strikes in a small, abandoned working-class village, disturbing the peace and tranquility of the Chardin family. Hermine learns of the terrible news while singing in La Bohème, an opera playing at the Capitole in Quebec City. The ruin of her family motivates the young woman to work even harder, leading her to meet with the seductive and wealthy Swiss widow, Rudolf Metzner. Passionate about music and lyrical arts, Metzner has secretly idolized the Val-Jalbert Nightingale since the beginning of her musical career.
After a lovely winter spent with their family on the banks of the Péribonka River, Hermine and Toshan must regretfully leave each other. The signer’s family finds refuge in Charlotte’s home in Val-Jalbert, which she has named Our Little Paradise, while Hermine returns to Quebec City to record an album under the aegis of Metzner. On the eve of her return to Lac-Saint-Jean, however, her agent kidnaps and holds her prisoner in a gilded cage. Her voice and talent will help the young woman to regain her freedom. Once again pregnant with Toshan’s child, Hermine radiates with happiness among her friends and family.
